Man Beat Friend To Death During Fight At Capital Region Home, DA Says

Prosecutors have filed formal charges against a man accused of beating his friend to death during a fight in the region.

Albany resident Keron Payne, age 34, was arraigned on one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree manslaughter in Albany County Court on Monday, March 25.

Police were called at around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, for an unconscious man inside an Albany residence on Clinton Avenue near Henry Johnson Boulevard.

The victim, identified as 30-year-old Jieshi Williams, was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital and later died from blunt force trauma injuries.

According to investigators, Williams and his girlfriend were at a gathering with another couple when he got into a physical fight with Payne. 

Neither prosecutors nor detectives have speculated on what led up to the altercation.

Payne was taken to the Albany County jail following his arraignment. He is due back in court on Tuesday, April 23.
